Thistles and Thorns

I watched the mother bird
fight thistle and thorn
to find food
for her babies in the harsh winter
storm,
and yet as she sat on those
thin branches
struggling to feed herself and
her children she still sang
to me a song;
reminding me that even in the
most terrible of storms
there's always something to be
grateful for
even in the dimmest light,
there is an absence of darkness
somewhere and so I smiled
and I sang a song to her;
perhaps, it was in my head but I
could have sworn she
smiled back.
