The Night Life

After dusk met the velvet cloak
and stars were playing
peek-a-boo with the clouds,
the lake came alive
with the night life.

The railing of the peer
became the anchor
for dozens
of silken masterpieces,
woven by tiny engineers,
with neighbors abounding.

A solitary firefly
blinked his tiny lantern,
with only his reflection
as a response.

At the beginning
of the quivering, illuminated path,
a crooked neck bird
paused on his scaled stilts,
where silver flashes
became only visible
by the mimicking
of raindrops.

As crickets and frogs
serenaded with lullabies,
in surround sound,
I smiled and pondered
at the glory of nature,
while songbirds slept.
