Unexpected Guests

Please do not leave when I scream.
I am not a child, easily frightened
By the white outlined shape of a man,
leaning over my husband as he sleeps,
until my cry awakes him to see no-one.
It was just a surprise to discover
another person in the room.

Please do not leave when I scream.
I am an adult, old enough not to be afraid,
as you stand around my headboard
while my husband works night shift.
I only left the room check the children.

Having made the effort to visit
why not stay a little longer?
I’d like to converse (if possible)
to look at your clothes,
see what you hold in your hands.
I ran out to fetch a friend
So they could meet you too.

Ignore my pounding heartbeat,
waking up to find your face staring into mine
was quite a shock!
You need not have disappeared.

If you return, I will promise not to scream.
If you promise not to leave when I do.
